Cotswolds

What better way to kick off your south-west adventure than in a National Landscape? Day one holds more than just beautiful scenery, though. Step into the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, Blenheim Palace and you might recognise it from Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015), James Bond’s Spectre (2015) and Bridgerton (2020–). Frozen in time, Woodchester Mansion offers a peek into a 19th-century construction project. It’s also where The Crown (2016–2023) and His Dark Materials (2019–2022) were filmed. While Poldark (2014–2019) fans will love exploring Dyrham Park.

Step back in time to an abandoned 19th-century construction project. The Grade 1 Listed Woodchester Mansion lifts the lid on Victorian gothic building techniques. The mansion became Gordonstoun boarding school in series two of The Crown (2016–2023), while the interior played host to the TV adaptation of His Dark Materials (2019–2022).

Period drama magic at Dyrham Park

With exhibitions, acres of ancient parkland to explore and family-friendly trails, this 17th-century house serves up a healthy dose of baroque style and elegance. No stranger to the big and small screen, Poldark (2015–2019), Sanditon (2019–2023) and The Remains of the Day (1993) filmed scenes here. You’ll be transported back through history with the house’s multi-sensory experience; expect scents, music and birdsong. 

Cotswolds 

From quaint villages to grand houses, the Cotswolds continues to deliver prime filming locations. Set in the 1700s, Poldark (2014–2019) set up camp to film at Chavenage House, as well as the TV adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s novel, Rivals (2024–). The quaint town of Tetbury serves up more Rivals backdrops, while day two is the gift that keeps on giving with locations for Bridgerton (2020–), 28 Days Later (2002), The Gentlemen (2019), Pearl Harbour (2001) and Slow Horses (2022–).

This magnificent 16th-century manor starred in the hit TV series Poldark as ‘Trenwith’ – the Poldarks’ family home. Though the story is set in Cornwall, this historic treasure is located in Tetbury, a quaint parish town in the heart of the Cotswolds. It has retained many of its 400-year-old original features: explore them on an entertaining guided tour, and enjoy lunch in the charming on-site cafe. Chavenage House was also one of the prime filming locations for the Disney+ series, Rivals (2024–).

The town was transformed into fictional ‘Cotchester’ in the Disney+ series Rivals. It's home to one of the widest ranges of historic boutiques in the Cotswolds, including the likes of Lorfords, Top Banana, Trilogie and more. Join the antiques experts and interior designers on Long Street and Church Street: many of the shops can arrange shipping too, so don’t worry if your suitcase isn’t quite big enough…

Nestled near Tetbury, Highgrove is home to Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Since 1980, His Majesty has shaped these gardens into a UK treasure, open to the public seasonally. Guided tours from April to September reveal the organic marvels. The Highgrove Shop offers unique products, while the Orchard Room restaurant indulges with a renowned cream tea. Events, from black-tie dinners to talks, grace the calendar. Proceeds support the philanthropic work of The King's Foundation. It’s Their Majesties’ 20th wedding anniversary in 2025, so there’s no more romantic time to visit.

Filming heaven at Badminton House

Ever wondered where the sport of badminton got its name? Look no further. The Grade I listed Badminton House in Gloucestershire is the home of the Duke and Duchess of Beaufort. Look out for the RHS Badminton Flower Show, garden open days, whisky tastings and the outdoor obstacle course, Tough Mudder. The house and estate are no strangers to a film crew, too. On the small screen, Bridgerton (2020–) and The Gentlemen (2024) were both filmed at the house. While big-screen movies, 28 Days Later (2002) and Pearl Harbour (2001) also shot scenes here.

Secrets await at Iford Manor Gardens

Set within the Cotswolds National Landscape, explore this Grade I registered garden on the grounds of the Iford Manor Estate. Striking a balance of architectural structure blended with nature's wild side, the gardens bloomed into life in the early 20th century. Take a Behind the Scenes Garden Tour with the head gardener to understand its secrets and history. Step into the private walled garden, complete with vegetable garden and glasshouse, which starred in the 2020 film, The Secret Garden.

Castle Combe's beauty awaits

Blue skies and reflections in the picturesque Cotswold village of Castle Combe.

With its honey-coloured stone houses and ambling Bybrook river, the village of Castle Combe is a true Cotswolds beauty – as well as a movie star. It was chosen by Steven Spielberg as a key filming location for his 2011 drama War Horse (featuring Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch), based on the famous children’s novel by Michael Morpurgo. The main street running through the village features in season 2 of Apple TV’s Slow Horses (2022). And that’s not all: Doctor Dolittle (1967), Stardust (2007) and The Wolfman (2010) were shot here, too.

Bristol

Day three takes you into the vibrant city of Bristol, teeming with cool hangouts and vintage vibes. Returning for another year is Gromit Unleashed 3, where you can follow the trail across the city spotting iconic characters from the Wallace & Gromit stories. Look out for the Wallace & Gromit mural en-route. Rivals (2024–) returns with filming locations dotted around the Old City and harbour, and there’s a cameo location from the TV show Skins (2007–2013), too.

Head to Quakers Lane to admire this cracking design by local artist Dave Bain, dedicated to animation studio Aardman’s iconic characters. The Bristolian animation studio has four Oscars to its name thanks to its stellar stop-motion stories, and this mural is a great tribute to its work. Naturally, Wallace and Gromit play a starring role, but see how many of Aardman’s other creations you can spot – think Shaun the Sheep and Chicken Run’s Babs.

Did someone say “Cheese Gromit?” Lookout for sculptures of well-loved Aardman characters dotted around the city this summer with a movie inspired theme. Gromit Unleashed is returning to Bristol with a selection of Nick Park’s most iconic characters, including Feathers McGraw, Norbot the ‘smart gnome’ and, of course, Wallace and Gromit. Found in 53 locations, the trail is free. Bristol’s historic centre is packed with independent shops, bars and eateries, plus a market that’s been trading since 1743. Not only will your jaw drop for the dishes on offer, the timeless glamour of the Grade II-listed building that houses this all-day restaurant is also a showstopper. A former-banking hall, the polish parquet flooring, vaulted cellings and white marble make for a spectacular setting for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks. Opened by King George V and Queen Mary in 1925, this mighty neo-Gothic landmark houses the University of Bristol's School of Law and School of Earth Sciences – hidden behind its castle-like façade. On Saturdays, guided tours reveal the grandeur of the Great Hall, Council Chamber and ornate libraries, and the magnificent views from the tower. Tickets are sold in aid of a local charity. In series four of Sex Education, the building doubles as the Wallace University library.

If live music is your jam, you’ll love Bristol Beacon’s eclectic gig line-up. Some of the music legends who’ve graced this stage include The Beatles, David Bowie, Ella Fitzgerald and Bob Dylan, so you know you’re in for a show-stopping night. Bath

Step back in time today – like, really back – to the 1st century AD and the earliest known thermal spa settlement in Britain: Bath. Founded by the Romans, the natural hot springs of this UNESCO World Heritage Centre were a welcome pull back then, which continues today. A mecca for period dramas, you can’t swing a bonnet without bumping into a Bridgerton filming location. The Jane Austen Centre offers a glimpse into the romance novelist’s life and inspirations, as does Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein. Visit The Little Theatre that inspired the director Wes Anderson and squeeze in a splash in the thermal spa if there’s time.

Head to Abbey Green, a stone's throw from the Roman Baths, and walk the 17th-century cobbled streets which stepped in as Covent Garden. While in the area, visit the Abbey Deli. This Grade II listed building became the Modiste dress shop in Bridgerton (2020–). Snap a photo in front of the double-fronted bay windows then step inside for afternoon tea. The Green was also host to several other Bridgerton scenes.

Experience the Little Theatre that’ll leave a big impression

A trip to The Little Theatre will leave a big impression as you sit back and take in a movie in charming surroundings. Built in 1935, time travel to a bygone era when you step through its doors. So quaint is this venue that director Wes Anderson immortalised it in his 2009 stop-motion adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox

Bath

Day two in Bath promises bumper film and TV experiences. Head down Bath Street and look out for familiar sites from the movie Wonka (2023). Find yourself in the setting of more than one Bridgerton (2020–) and Queen Charlotte (2023) ball, and walk through the front door of Lady Danbury’s house. Round off your day with a cheeky cocktail or two, made by yourself during a cocktail making masterclass.

Stroll into the past on Bath Street

Step back to the 18th century as you take in this street lined with Grade I listed Georgian buildings, historic Roman baths, local shops and cafes. Built around 1791, Bath Street runs between the Roman Baths to the Cross Bath, the street gained the royal seal of approval by King James II. The street is also no stranger to a film crew or two. In 1995 it was a backdrop to the period drama Persuasion, and in 2023 it set the scene for the film Wonka

The Jane Austen festival at Bath Assembly Rooms, Bath

When it opened in 1771, this entertainment venue was described as ‘the most noble and elegant of any in the kingdom' – and when you see its glittering chandeliers and soaring architecture, you’ll understand why. Today, it is a fabulous location for cultural events, festivals and music concerts, and a highlight of many city tours. Entrance is free, and the Georgian architecture is exquisite. If the interior looks familiar, you’re right. It has welcomed the Ton’s finest social gatherings, including the ball in Bridgerton (2020–) where Daphne and Simon met in season one.

The rolling hills and coast of Somerset are calling today. Explore Tyntesfield House, the Victorian gothic revival property that has welcomed Sherlock Holmes and Dr Who. Walk over the water along England’s only Grade I listed pier, as seen in Sanditon (2019 – 2023), and refuel in the Victorian Pagoda cafe boasting scenic coastal views. Voted Pier of the Year 2021 by the National Pier Society, look out for pop-up markets, fizz and chips on the pier, and the community archives with pictures and documents from years gone by. Take a walk down the pier like One Direction in the filming of their music video, You & I.

Accessible by rail from Bristol, take a trip to the coast for a packed annual events calendar, and quirky shoreside fun including crazy golf and an iconic pier. It's even spotted in Sanditon (2019–2023), Never Let Me Go (2010) and The Remains of the Day (1993).

Explore the endless sands of Brean Beach

Stretching for seven miles (11km), this sandy beach is a haven for sandcastle building, ice-cream strolling, sun worshiping, dog walking and stunning sunsets. Explore maritime history at the wreck of SS Norman, escape the hustle of daily life walking through the sand dunes, and round off your visit with a drink at The Sundowner Beach Cafe Bar. So picturesque is this beach that filming for scenes in the TV adaptation of Jane Austen’s unfinished novel, Sanditon (2019 – 2023), took place here.

Tour Montacute House and grounds

Feel like you’ve seen this Elizabethan house before? Fans of Wallace & Gromit will recognise it as the inspiration for Toddington Hall in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005). The house also doubled as Greenwich Palace in the BBC drama seriesWolf Hall (2015–2025). Tour the 16th-century house and gardens, walk the woodlands in the estate, refuel at the cafe and shop local produce and gifts.  

Wiltshire

Your final day brings in some film and TV heavyweights; notably Downton Abbey (2010–2015), Harry Potter (2001–2011) and Poldark (2015–2019). Visit the quintessentially English village of Lacock, with its quaint streets and stone buildings making the perfect set for Downton Abbey. You’ll recognise Lacock Abbey from the Harry Potter movies, as well as TV’s Wolf Hall (2015–2025). Bowood House and Gardens serves up Sanditon (2019–2023), Poldark and Downton Abbey backdrops, while the pretty market town of Corsham brings Rivals (2024–), Poldark and The Remains of the Day (1993) vibes. And, while in the region, it would be rude not to visit the iconic Stonehenge.

Make a stop at the world-famous prehistoric monument Stonehenge and take a walk around the 4,500-year-old stone circle with a self-guided podcast tour, marvelling at the mysteries of just how it got there, and why. Or visit the world’s largest prehistoric stone circle, which wraps around the village of Avebury, taking in the lovely Avebury Manor and Garden and Alexander Keiller Museum.

Visitors at Lacock Abbey and village, Wiltshire

Lacock village’s stone buildings made it the perfect place to recreate a 1920s livestock market in series six of Downton Abbey. Some scenes in the Downton Abbey movie were also filmed in Lacock, cementing it as a key filming location for the series. Hidden away on the edge of the Cotswolds in Wiltshire, Lacock is a great stop-off while adventuring through the South West.

Filming heaven at Lacock Abbey

Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire

Developed around a 13th-century nunnery, this property is said to be the birthplace of modern photography. Set in spacious woodland and grounds, the abbey plays host to lots of filming, from three of the Harry Potter (2001–2009) movies to Pride and Prejudice (1995), and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018). On site you’ll find a photography museum and plenty to see, from medieval cloisters to its gothic hall.

Behind the scenes at Bowood House and Gardens

Mr. Carson’s cottage from the fictional Downton Abbey estate was filmed here in Wiltshire at Bowood House and Gardens. Explore the 18th-century house and magnificent parkland, which was designed by the iconic architect Capability Brown. Book a guided tour for a peek behind the scenes of the house’s long history. Relax in the resort spa, dine in one of the eateries, take in a round of golf, and extend your stay at one of the luxury rooms or suites. Other filming nods at the estate include Sanditon (2019–2023) and Poldark (2015–2019).

Get snap happy in Corsham

This historic market town is picture perfect and always ready for its close-up. Nestled in the Wiltshire countryside on the edge of the Cotswolds, Corsham is only 10 miles (16km) away from Bath. Stroll through its picturesque streets with independent locals shops, cafes and restaurants; watch out for the local peacocks casually strolling by while having your afternoon tea. It’s no wonder the town has featured in several films and TV shows, including The Remains of the Day (1993), Poldark (2015–2019) and most recently the Disney+ show Rivals (2024–).
